The Kryfona Kingdom (Kryfona: Kryfonakinadina; For. Kryf. /ˈkrɪˌf.nɑ.k.nɑ.d.nɑ/, Yaraa: Kryfŏnskanadŭn) is a large, landlocked country in the Old World comprised of 19 provinces, two of which are autonomous. It is officially a federal constitutional monarchy in perpetuity, and is governed by a monarch, usually a king. Kings may inherit the throne either through hereditary means, appointed means, or through elective means by way of a general election, and this has been so since the Great Reforms of 1920. To date, no king has been properly elected to the position of monarch. The Kryfona Kingdom also has a parliament, the Kryfonsparliszaiye, which serves as its legislative branch, as well as a High Court which serves as its judicial branch. Although the monarch has historically had ultimate authority, in recent memory the powers of the crown have been neutered significantly, hence the Kingdom's status as a constitutional monarchy.

Established in 1248 by Jaszclun Brszeyal but first governed by Tykraasz Geynilar, the Kryfona Kingdom had a relatively uneventful early history and spent the majority of the 1200s and 1300s merely establishing itself as a local power. Between around 1300 and 1650, the Kingdom gradually expanded itself to the east and north, and to a lesser extent the south; during the same time frame, the Kingdom underwent a period of unrivaled and then-unprecedented prosperity. Although known today as a belligerent nation, the Kingdom waged no wars between its founding and 1546, and this period of its history became known as the "Glory Era."

Starting in about 1546 and progressing as late as 1850, the Kingdom experienced a prolonged period of on-and-off warfare, during which it expanded further eastward and ultimately engulfed the Tuszke State and the Yaraan Confederation, as well as chunks of what is today Seuyastazal from the Arieles. Although it lost a number of these wars and also experienced a number of large scale setbacks socially, politically, and economically, it emerged from this era, known as the "Chaotic Era," as one of the two regional superpowers, the other being the Arieles Kingdom.

As the Chaotic Era gradually transitioned into the "Uncertain Era," the Kryfona Kingdom exploded as a leading political and industrial power, but was also rocked by political unrest and large scale unpopularity. Strife in Yaraa led to the Yaraan Secession Crisis in 1802, and the Annexation of Kryfona Tuszke in 1883 was poorly handled and deeply unpopular with much of the country. The transition from the Uncertain Era to the Modern Era of the 1900s was also rocky, as the incorporation of Vyfarla caused a significant political crisis, and months after, devastating civil war broke out in the wake of a similar but much more serious political crisis. The civil war resulted in the deaths of nearly eight million people and devastated the nation. Despite the massive setbacks brought on by the war, the Kryfona Kingdom gradually rebuilt, and by 1945 much of the nation had recovered from the war. Nevertheless, political unrest from Yaraans and Tuszkeans over civil rights, political rights, and the status of their provinces continued well into the middle of the century, and extremist politics in the form of the Eporisya Malosom caused political crises as late as the 1970s.

In contemporary history, the Kryfona Kingdom has enjoyed relative stability and a considerable increase in growth, alongside significant increases in population. Today, the nation is generally considered to be the significant power of the Old World, and a minor power in the entire world. The Kingdom is a founding member of the Global Unified Initiative.

The Kryfona Kingdom is the largest country by land area and population in the Old World. It has a population of approximately 84,748,023 people according to 2017 estimates, a little over eleven million more than any other country in the Old World. The Kryfona Kingdom is the most ethnically and racially diverse nation in the Old World, with a 23% minority population. Although once stigmatized, minorities are now accepted in Kryfona society and minorities are in fact over-represented in government and many other professions. In terms of population, the Kryfona population is heavily concentrated. As of 2011, nearly 50% of the population was found within the three provinces of Lawvsgara, Reriskzeiy, and Yaraa. The capital city of the Kingdom, Nylzsryf, has a population of over 8 million and a metropolitan area of 15 million alone. It is the largest city in both the Kryfona Kingdom and the entire Old World, and one of the largest cities ever to exist. Other major cities in the Kingdom include Yarasil, Keszanetaa, Azsaeh, and eight other cities with populations of over a million people. The Kryfona Kingdom is presently bordered to the south by the Arieles Kingdom and the Adborthos Republic, and to the west by the Federatsija Elųnessia and the Republic of Lunaria.

History

Prehistory

The pre-history of the Kryfona Kingdom is not well attested compared to the surrounding area, for reasons that remain uncertain. As far as can be ascertained by the historical record, the area that today makes up the Kryfona Kingdom was populated by some point around 100,000 years ago. The first settlers of the region were probably Drakona in nature, owing to the migrations of what became the Eloonis and other Drakonic groups across it from the east to the west. Small, probably temporary villages of dragons were the first likely settlements of the region, and a network of them in the region had probably been established before 100,000 years ago to facilitate the movement of Eloonis migrants.

The region on which the Kingdom now rests was gradually settled over a period of about 20,000 years when Kryfona began migrating from the southeast into what is now known as the Kryfona Homelands. Most of the original Kryfona Homelands, which ring the area of Nylzsryf, had been settled or occupied by about 7,000 years ago.

Dal-Tetas era (1000-1099)

By around what is now considered the year 1000 in the Gregorian calendar, the Kryfona tribes had essentially transitioned into an era known as the Dal-Tetas, during which they greatly expanded their influence and power and ultimately, through fate of war, united themselves. Most of what would become the western Kryfona Kingdom had been occupied by Kryfona settlers by that point, and the tribes were then mostly based on geography. The most prominent of these bands, the Nylzsa (who would later lend their name to Nylzsryf), was by then in practical control of almost the entirety of what is now the Western Kingdom, and a loose coalition of "states" to the north that were aligned with them controlled most of the Northern Kingdom. Although there were a number of extant and unaffiliated states to the west, by 1000 most of these city-states and proper-states were in a sort of "coalition." This was the first time that most of the Kryfona were properly unified in their history, although this coalition was by and large informal and on the whole extremely unstable.

Nevertheless, these small states gradually banded together officially throughout the 1000s, starting with a treaty between the Nylzsa and the rest of the Northern States that established a unified state that became known as the Nylzsa State. Gradually, other states entered into treaties themselves, and eventually, the Kryfona states were almost unified. A mostly-unified Kryfona state repelled and ended the Drakonic Dal-Tetas state in the Dal-Tetas War, after they went to war over border conflicts in 1076. Shortly thereafter, two failed attempts at a unified Kryfona state–the Istjeniy and the Trztye an e Kryfona–sprung up and gradually disintegrated. A third, the Kryfona Trztye, was more successful but ultimately also failed.

Early era (1248-1335)

The Kryfona Kingdom was the final of many attempts by the Kryfona tribes to unify themselves. While the exact date of the Kingdom's founding is not known officially due to how long ago it was founded, records suggest, the Kryfona Kingdom was founded around May 4th, 1248. However, it is known that kingdom was established by Jaszclun Brszeyal, a Kryfona explorer.

Brszeyal, the Kryfona who was at the forefront of unifying the masses again after the failures of the Trztye an e Kryfona and Kryfona Trztye, set the foundations for the kingdom, and the Kryfona government was set up on May 12th by him. Howeyver, despite his exceptional ability to unify the Kryfona, he was not appointed king of the Kryfona. Instead, Tykraasz Geynilar was appointed as the king of the newly formed kingdom, after a case of bribery. This event came to be known in Kryfona history as The Inglorious Coup, and in spite of Brszeyal's insistence, Tykraasz went on to lead the Kingdom for years afterwards.

In 1248, what would eventually become the modern Kryfona Kingdom would be established by Jaszclun Brszeyal and Tykraasz Geynilar. Brszeyal, who actually established the Kingdom, did so in the tiny settlement of Nylzsryf, and Nylzsryf was subsequently declared the capital. Despite founding the Kingdom, however, Brszeyal was snubbed from becoming the first Kryfona king–instead, Geynilar was appointed to the position. This act became known as the Inglorious Coup, and caused serious distress in the Kingdom during its formative years before ultimately being forgotten to history. Geynilars subsequently ruled the country for most of the 1200s and 1300s, during which the nation established itself as a significant power.

Glory Era (1335-1546)

Between about 1300 and 1650, the Kryfona Kingdom experienced a massive amount of growth in virtually every aspect of life. No wars took place between 1248 and 1536, and during this period of absolute quiet, the Kingdom ballooned into a regional power. The kingdom's expansion southward and westward during the 1400s ultimately resulted in it sharing a border with the city state of Ratinethos (later to become the First Adborthos Republic) as well as parts of the New World, particularly the eventual autonomous state of Lunaria. Expansion to the north and the east occurred during the early 1500s, and was responsible for the incorporation of the modern northwestern provinces of the Kryfona Kingdom as well as modern Kghelias and northern parts of Yaraa. This expansion gave it borders with the Tuszke State as well as the Yaraan Confederation, and eventually these borders sparked wars in which both were taken over and annexed into the Kryfona Kingdom. This period became known as the "Glory Era" of the Kryfona Kingdom.

Chaotic Era (1546-1802)

The Chaotic Era commenced with the outbreak of the Tuszke War in 1546, after Kihuža Zastilän refused to voluntarily incorporate the independent Tuszke State into the Kryfona Kingdom on the orders of Rodskowsje Svariyantina. Tensions between the Tuszke State and the Kingdom had already been running high due to their shared border, and the refusal of Zastilän to subjugate himself simply served as a breaking point between the two nations. The Tuszke War was short but devastating for both sides; while the Tuszke War was a victory for the Kryfona Kingdom, over 65,000 of its soldiers were killed or wounded. The Tuszke State was devastated even moreso, suffering 483,000 civilian and military casualties. The state was subsequently turned into a Kryfona puppet state with Zastilän at the head, and it was in this unincorporated state that the Kryfona Tuszke would remain until 1883.

Diplomatic relations between the Arieles and Kryfona Kingdoms during this period were also strained; they were not quite broken, it must be said, but certainly the terms the two nations were on were not amicable. Under Yoszamide Mikoszaakide, the king who had preceded Rodskowsje, the Kryfona had been openly antagonistic to the Arieles, particularly in their settling of the Ojtaslant, and while Rodskowsje made a considerable effort to fix this, the two nations had essentially fallen out with one another by 1555. The Arieles embassy in Nylzsryf closed in 1556 after it became clear that it was not safe for the embassy to continue basic function, and remained closed until 1568, when it was briefly restored. Conversely, the Kryfona embassy in Iliõrafili was shuddered for a decade after it closed in 1559.

The first of what would become a series of protracted wars over territorial claims exploded in 1563, when the Kryfona Kingdom refused to renounce its claims to the Ojtasland, and the Arieles subsequently declared war. The war–Keltusz's War, so named for Kryfona general Aryze Keltusz–was a tactical draw but as a practical matter solidified Kryfona claims immediately to the north of the Ojtaslant in what is now modern day Seuyastazal, as well as parts of Tauba and Szaras. The war was responsible for the deaths of 15,000; much of the Ojtasland also ended up being razed by Keltusz in the course of the war, which would become a recurring theme throughout the period.

Rodskowsje died not long after the conclusion of Keltusz's War, and in his place Teriadszkiv Svariyantina took the throne. Teriadszkiv's reign was relatively quiet with one major exception in the Joszyke War, which blew up between the Kryfona and Arieles in 1583 over unresolved border conflicts. The Joszyke War was the longest struggle between the two nations until the 14 year long Majszyx War broke out in 1836; much like that war, the Joszyke War began as a disaster for the Kryfona, but eventually turned in favor of the Kryfona. Ultimately, the war concluded as an effective draw–by the end of 1586 the war had caused the razing of most of what is today the Middle Kingdom, as well as large tracts of the Arieles-Kryfona border at the time, severely impacting both nations. Once it became clear that no progress was being made by either side, peace talks began. A peace deal was brokered throughout the course of 1589, and was ultimately agreed to in early 1590. Neither side came out particularly poorly.

Starting in 1546, the Kryfona Kingdom entered a period that became known for its massive, long-lived wars against multiple nations. In the north, the first war of the series, the Tuszke War, was a decisive victory for the Kryfona Kingdom but resulted in the deaths of over 500,000 people. From the ashes of the Tuszke State, the puppet state of Kryfona Tuszke was created. Tuszke would not be properly incorporated until 1883. In the south, tensions also ran high. After diplomatic relations with the Arieles Kingdom broke down in 1562, the Kryfona Kingdom entered a protracted series of wars with their neighbor kingdom that would last for over 200 years. Large scale tensions between the two first erupted in Keltusz's War (1563-64), which ultimately ended indecisively. Subsequent periods of war erupted between 1583-1590, 1632-1635, 1706-1709, 1758-760, and 1836-1850. Single year wars between the two kingdoms also took place in 1699, 1703, 1710, 1713, 1716, and 1763. Significant damage was done to the Kryfona Kingdom in the process–Nylzsryf was burned in 1634, and the kingdom nearly collapsed when the Daeszr became almost worthless during the 1840s–but the Arieles Kingdom lost significant tracts of land including modern Seuyastazal Province in the process. Despite this extensive history of wars, since the end of the Majszyx War in 1850, the two nations have coexisted mostly in peace–only a few small scale diplomatic incidents have taken place.

Uncertain Era and Modern Era (1802-present)

The Uncertain Era of the Kryfona Kingdom is generally regarded as having begun with the outbreak of the Yaraan Secession Crisis in 1802. Yaraan concerns over being ignored and their sovereignty led to the Yaraan Autonomous Province making a declaration of secession, which was subsequently violently crushed by the Kryfona crown under Rogdin Lunaerterijalis. The violent reprisal by the crown did not stop insurgency, however, and for five years a low-level conflict between Yaraan secessionist groups and the government raged in Yaraa before being stamped out for good in 1807. The Crisis was not without significant impact; shortly before the insurgency was stamped out for good, King Lunaerterijalis committed suicide, prompting the Crisis of Rogdin and resulting in Trenjiasov Mikoszaakide ascending to the throne.

A surging Kryfona Loyalist Party took control of the Kryfonsparliszaiye for the first time in the 1813 elections, but they quickly lost their majority, being forced into the opposition in 1819. Politics were one of the few things that changed in the early 1800s; the 1820s and 1830s were relatively quiet times both domestically and in the foreign sphere for the Kingdom. Throughout the former half of the 1830s, however, a growing conflict over the borders of the Fyranasaa Territory and the province of Seuyastazal between the Kingdom and its neighbor, the Arieles Kingdom gradually built up before exploding into Majszyx War, a war that ultimately lasted 14 years and ended in a modest Kryfona victory. During the war, much of the Middle Kingdom was devastated; the Daeszr also suffered heavily and nearly collapsed in 1841. Loyalists won power during the course of the war (1837 and 1843), but were voted out shortly before its conclusion in 1849.

A labor strike poster from the Szarase and Szarasa for Labor Rights, 1878. Labor strikes in the Kingdom were frequent from 1856 to 1900, and labor struggle was particularly intense during the 1870s and 1880s.

The Kryfonic Industrial Revolution had already been in swing for almost a decade before exploding in the late 1840s and early 1850s. The subsequent period of twenty-eight years between 1852 and 1880 was defined by the massive growth of industry, particularly in the big cities like Nylzsryf, Keszanetaa, and Hiy. Conversely, the Loyalists came to dominate Kryfona politics during this period on the back of labor voters, who were now considerably more numerous than they previously had been. The result of the Industrial Revolution in the Kingdom was tremendous, and brought the Kingdom into a period that is sometimes called the "Industrial Golden Age." Technological growth during this period was also explosive, with hundreds of new inventions that subsequently became commonplace throughout the Kingdom because of mass production; population increased significantly during this period as well. The period saw the death of Trenjiasov Mikoszaakide in 1841 and the ascension of Werykoev Ceudininkon, who ruled until 1865. Also, in 1854, just four years after the war which was partially fought over it ended, the Territory of Fyranasaa was incorporated as Fyranasaa Province and became the 16th province of the Kingdom.

The prosperity of the Kingdom continued into the 1870s on the back of the Revolution, but a significant period of turmoil began with the labor resistance of 1871 that gradually expanded into six years of unrest and sporadic bursts of labor-based violence and revolt that continued until the turn of the century. The period of unrest, which lasted from 1871 until 1876, became known as the Summers of Hell; similar "mini-Summers" took place in 1881, 1884, and 1885, with other unrelated labor unrest in 1889, 1894, and 1897. A second period of turmoil for the Kingdom came with the Annexation of the Kryfona Tuszke by King Yeqsrin Worissilo in 1883. The Kryfona Tuszke had previously been a puppet state, and Worissilo, a native of the state, saw to it that the state ascended. It did so, becoming Reriskzeiy Province on 10 June, but did so with a great deal of controversy. Rioting took place in the new province, and necessitated an intervention and occupation.

Instability and political change continued into the 1890s and the turn of the century with the rise of the Presidentialist Movement and the continued dominance of the Loyalists in federal elections. Labor disputes were less frequent during the decade, but remained almost an everyday 'fact of life' to many Kryfona. In the latter half of the decade, LGBT rights became a significant topic, particularly after Szaras and Seuyastazal legalized same-sex marriages on 22 July, 1897 and 28 January, 1898 respectively. A proposal to nationally legalize same sex marriages via amendment was introduced into the Kryfonsparliszaiye on 27 December, 1899, and despite opposition from some Royalists and members of the far-right, the amendment passed 62–19 and was officially ratified on 15 April, 1900. The Kryfona Kingdom became the first nation in the Old or New Worlds to legalize same-sex marriages. During 1899 and 1900, the Vyfarla crisis and the decision on whether or not to allow the Vyfarla and South Vyfarla territories into the Kingdom (and if so, whether or not it should occur in one piece or not) was a matter of debate–ultimately Vyfarla Province was admitted as one on 7 April, 1900, to great controversy.

The death of Yeqsrin Worissilo on 15 February, 1900 brought Yhurtienaid Qailenid into power–Qailenid subsequently reformed the Kingdom into a federation headed by a president instead of a king. This reform led to political crisis within the Kingdom, and effectively forced the monarchy into exile, where it thereafter refounded itself as the Kryfona Royalist Movement. Members of the Royalist Movement plotted to undermine President Qailenid beginning in May of that year, and ultimately the plot to undermine Qailenid became known as Operation Jaigha Qailenid. Originally, the plot was scheduled to be executed on 8 August, 1900, but after the success of Kryfona general Yiulsztihq Vryge in convincing other generals to go along with the plan, the execution date was moved back to 9 September, 1900. On that day, the plot occurred, but failed ultimately to capture or kill Qailenid–subsequently, the Royalist Movement declared Nylzsryf liberated and called for general uprising, starting the Kryfona Civil War.

The Kryfona Civil War devastated the Kingdom, and was the deadliest and costliest conflict in the history of the Kryfona Kingdom. After two years of prolonged warfare, the Royalist Movement defeated Qailenid and the presidentialists, at the cost of a combined 11.3 million casualties and fatalities between them. The war displaced 7 million other Kryfona, and it would not be until the 1940s and 1950s that the Kryfona Kingdom recovered fully from the war. Qalenid, who survived the war, was exiled from the Kingdom as a result of it–in his place, Xeriren Awaseq was 'elected' King in 1902 by the inner circle of the Royalist Movement. Royalist sentiment in the aftermath of the war brought the Royalist Party back into power in the 1903 elections, but they failed to attain a majority and were handicapped by their use of a patkoaliza subsequently. Nonetheless, the Kingdom Amendment of 1903, which permanently enshrined the nation as a monarchy, passed the Kryfonsparliszaiye unanimously.

The period between 1903 and 1920 was a time of relative quiet for the Kingdom. Beyond the controversial passing of the Yaraan Act, 1904, very little of significance happened; the Kingdom was in the process of rebuilding from the war. The Royalists retained power–narrowly–throughout the period on the back of several patkoalizasi, and the newly-founded Yaraan Kryfon's Movement essentially locked down the seats of Yaraa politically. A large scale increase in the Kryfona population was noticed between 1910 and 1920, owing to the mass movement of people back into the Kingdom after the war, and the mostly-unrelated migration of many Kryfona from the Kryfona Territory in the Arieles Kingdom to the Kryfona Kingdom.

The rise of Impurism and the Impurist Movement of the Kryfona Kingdom, and the intensification of the Yaraan and Tuszkean political revolutions in the 1920s and 1930s brought rumblings of instability to the Kingdom, soon to be followed by active unrest. Impurist assassinations and bombing campaigns ramped up in both Yaraa and Tuszke during the 1930s in an effort to combat the political revolutions, leading to surging nationalist populations in both areas. The rise of the Sovereign Movement and Proper Tuszkeanism in Tuszke, and similar, generally leftist movements such as the Yaraan Secession Front and the Social-Populist Party in Yaraa took place throughout the 1940s, and similar nationalistic movements sprouted up throughout the Kingdom during this period. In 1945, Loyalists rode this nationalist wave to their first government since 1897, which allied with the YKM and would rule until 1957.

The 1950s continued the trouble, and notably saw the death of Xeriren Awaseq and the ascension of his son, Tyeri. The older Awaseq infamously purged his cabinet in the 1952 Massacre of the Cabinet, leading to significant outrage. Awaseq's actions were investigated, but before the investigation could complete, he died of natural causes. The younger Awaseq briefly presided in the aftermath of this over a Kingdom that was–beyond occasional attacks by Impurists–relatively stable. A hostage crisis in 1950 and a massive bombing in 1957 came to define the period in any case; Royalists on the back of this and the perceived ineptitude of the Loyalists to halt the crisis regained the Kryfonsparliszaiye in 1957. In 1955, the Standoff of Orăliă at the Orăliă border crossing between the Arieles and Kryfona Kingdoms nearly escalated into full-scale war between the two powers, but was ultimately defused after several days of negotiations and withdrawals.

Cover of "Plan XIII" for Yaraan Invasion. This Plan XIII was executed on 1 August, 1963, when Tyeri Awaseq ordered the Invasion of Yaraa.

The 1960s brought open conflict between the Yaraans and the crown, political change, and a series of major events in the Kingdom's history. The far-left of the Kingdom, particularly in Yaraa and Tuszke won significant victories in 1963; notably, the Yaraan party Revolutionaries won 23 seats in its first elections. Not long after, a worsening crisis between the government of Yaraa and King Tyeri Awaseq exploded over the Purge scandal and its aftermath. When the government of Yaraa refused to dissolve itself at Awaseq's request, he fired his Yaraan Affairs minister and on 1 August, 1963 invaded Yaraa. Occupation of the province continued until 1967. After the invasion, a twenty-day long seat ban was implemented against the YKM; the party fought and eventually overturned the ban. These events crippled the government's popularity, and in the Kryfonsparliszaiye elections that year, the Royalists and Loyalists combined for 18 lost seats. The newly federal United Kryfona Party and Pažem Tuszkeya gained 10 and 6 of these seats, respectively. The following year in 1964, the Yaraan Crisis–an insurgency against the Crown led by the far-left in Yaraa–necessitated the intervention of the army. The Crisis continued for four years, ending only in 1967 and resulting in thousands of deaths. Partly because of lingering unpopularity over Yaraa's invasion and partly over their handling of the Crisis, the KRP lost another six seats in 1969. Altogether, the KRP and KLP lost twenty-four seats between 1963 and 1969.

The 1970s were the first significant period of domestic stability for the Kingdom since the 1920s. Although Impurist bombings and attacks continued, after 1967 their numbers dropped precipitously due to better policing and counter-terrorism operations. The far-left of Yaraa and Tuszke also lost much of their power during this period, leading to a decrease in national polarization. Nationalism nonetheless remained a significant driver in politics–in the 1975 elections, the Yaraan Kryfon's Movement and the Pažem Tuszkeya reached their high water marks, winning winning 18 and 13 seats respectively and establishing the Secessionist bloc. The rise of these parties did not go unnoticed; on 14 September, 1976, an Impurist attack against the Pažem's party headquarters killed twelve, including two of their standing MPs. Subsequently the Pažem and the YKM boycotted their seats for seventeen days until the government properly addressed the shooting; that year, Impurism was outlawed. In the foreign sphere, however, the Kingdom was forced into the Adborthos War when a hotel in Moszejye was bombed by agents of the Adborthos Dictatorship. The war lasted from 1974 to 1977, and resulted in around 13,500 Kryfona fatalities.

The years since the end of the Adborthos War have been quiet in the Kingdom, with little of merit occurring during the period. Tyeri Awaseq died of natural causes in 1987, and was replaced with King Ghrodinh Virkozsilixaniz, who rules to this day. The Aryela Party, the last federal party, ascended later that year, winning its first seat in the elections that took place. The growth of the United Kryfona Party throughout the two decades also culminated in the party entering a power sharing agreement with the Royalists in 1999 after the parties won the same number of seats; in 2005, the party won its own plurality of seats, bringing an end to 42 years of Royalist rule. The United Kryfona Party increased its plurality in 2011, and its coalition now has 49 seats in the Kryfonsparliszaiye.

Geography, climate, and environment

The Kryfona Kingdom is the largest of the Old World countries, with a total area calculated at just over over 308,760 square miles (‪799,684.7‬ km2). It is about twice the size of the neighboring Arieles Kingdom, which is 155,502 square miles (‪402,748.3‬ km2), and over 22 times the size of the Adborthos Republic (13,824 square miles; ‪35,804 km2), its other Old World neighbor. Around 1,059 sq mi (‪‪2,742.8‬ km2) of this total area is water, all of which is contained in lakes that dot the Kingdom's landscape. Although historically, the Kryfona Kingdom has laid claim to other regions on its side of the continent, it currently has no water borders, nor does it have any official territories to which it claims.

The East and Northeast Kingdom, which is comprised of the four provinces of Yerljasqar, Vyfarla, Reriskzeiy and Fyranasaa is dominated by rolling hills and small mountain ranges that give way to hot, flat plains. Yerljasqar is roughly divided in half between the Gelaa Mountains in the east and the Low Yerljasqar Plain in the west. The Jiviheda Range of Upper Reriskzeiy and Vyfarla gradually transitions into the Tuszkean Crater and the Vyfarlan Floodplain respectively in the lower half of the two provinces. The lowlands of the two provinces are bisected by the Eiwen River, which flows through and gives name to the city of Eiwena in Vyfarla. Fyranasaa is centered on the Vazsco Crater, and is home to the Decaying Range in its northern half and the Szyrnid Hills in the south.

Yaraa and the Southeastern province of Taharlsqov are both home to the eastern end of the Great Middle Plains, and are bisected by the Yaraa River, one of the largest drainage basins in the Kryfona Kingdom. North Yaraa is home to the western end of the Decaying Range, and the northwestern part of the province is dominated by the Yaraan Highlands. The Middle Kingdom, which consists of the five provinces of Kghelias, Elesaqa, Szaras, Seuyastazal, and Yaravneid, is almost totally covered by the middle and western end of the Great Middle Plains. Nizian Point in Kghelias is generally considered to be the rough center of the Great Middle Plains, and is also the lowest point in the Kryfona Kingdom at 431 feet above sea level.

The Northwest Kingdom provinces of Azsaeh and Peiretsaja are dominated by the parallel Szanek Range, Azsaeh Mountains, and Dinat Mountains. The Szanek Range and the Azsaeh Mountains are home to all five of the Kryfona Kingdom's 14,000 foot mountains, as well as essentially all of the Kingdom's mountains above 10,000 feet in elevation. 14,672 foot Azanzkane Peak is the highest point in the Kryfona Kingdom, and is contained within the Szanek Range. The Dinat Mountains, while lower in elevation than the other two chains, contains a number of 10,000 foot or more peaks. The innumerable valleys of the three mountain ranges are the location of virtually all of the two provinces' populations. Both the city of Azsaeh and Wavoldes are contained within mountain valleys, as are many of the other significant cities of the two provinces.

The Southwest and Midwest Kingdom (comprising Lawvsgara, Rsza, and Vrlxsena, and Tauba, Areimsede, and Iyarzalhne respectively) is mostly characterized by its gradual rise from east to west as a part of the Greater Nylzsa Valley. The Greater Nylzsa Valley spans Lawvsgara, Tauba, and parts of Iyarzalhne and Areimsede, and the Lawvsgara and Azam rivers flow in a west to east course through it before flowing into Pelxes Lake, near the city of Uszyaa. To the west of the Greater Nylzsa Valley, the Czuryunl Plains, which stretch from the city of Galaszyz to the city of Teras, gradually rise before leveling out close to the western Kryfona border.

The Kryfona Kingdom is currently the largest nation in the Old World, housing an estimated 84,748,023 people as of 2017. This population is up from the 83,116,113 which were recorded by the 2015 census. Currently, it is estimated that approximately 2,235 people are added to the population of the Kryfona Kingdom every day. In addition to being the largest nation in the Old World, the Kryfona Kingdom is the fastest growing nation in the Old World, with a growth rate of about 2.5% per five years. With the exception of a period between 1953 and 1969 in which immigration was heavily restricted, this growth rate has been sustained for almost one hundred years, and is largely fueled by immigration into the Kingdom. Birth rates in the Kingdom have decreased significantly since 1900, having gone from about 4.2 children per family to just over 2.2 in 2000. The estimated birth rate in 2015 was approximately 2.21. Since about 1985, according to the data of the Bureau of Census, the growth rate of the Kingdom has been gradually increasing, and has exhibited an upwards trend.

In terms of minority percentage, the Kryfona Kingdom is one of the most diverse Old World nations, with a 23% (about 19.5 million person) ethnic and species minority population. Most of these minorities are the Kingdom's large population of Yaraan Kryfona and Tuszkean Kryfona, who were assimilated into the nation with the annexation of the Yaraan Confederacy and the Tuszke State, respectively. A very large portion of the remaining minority population is made up of the Kingdom's Arieles minority, who are referred to as Aryela. Small pockets of Adborthos exist in the province of Vrlxsena, and very small populations of other minorities such as Aetalis and Elųsi exist very close to the Kryfona border at Rszei.

Despite this diversity, many minorities are confined to only certain regions of the country. Although Aryela are ubiquitous throughout large portions of the Southern Kingdom as a whole, they are virtually nonexistent as a population in the Northern Kingdom. Yaraans overwhelmingly are confined to their autonomous province, and Tuszkeans likewise are largely confined to theirs. Adborthos are negligible outside of a peninsula-like feature in the very south of Vrlxsena, immediately south of Teras. Such widespread concentration of minorities has brought significant criticism to the Kryfona Kingdom both historically and presently–in effect, it is argued, the mass concentration of minorities acts as segregation. Concerns of "wide-spread segregation" have been raised by the Arieles Kingdom, as well as the United Provinces of Edazora as recently as 2006. Acts to prevent the acceleration and exacerbation of this trend have been repeatedly debated by the Kryfonsparliszaiye, the Kingdom's legislative body, since then.

In regards to sexuality and gender, the Kryfona Kingdom has one of the largest sexually "atypical" populations, with between 3.9% and 4.6% of the Kryfona Kingdom (3.3 and 3.9 million people) identifying as gay, asexual, or another unspecified sexuality. Another 15%, or about 12.7 million people, are believed to practice bisexuality to some extent, far and away the largest population by number (but not by percentage) in the Old World. About 80% of the Kryfona Kingdom identifies as straight. The reason for this unusually high non-straight population remains subject to much debate and controversy–theories have been posited from the openness in the Kingdom about sexuality, to the lack of religious influence, to genetics and potential species links, and so on, none of which seem to adequately explain the matter.

About 5% of the Kryfona Kingdom's population is non-Kryfona; this equaling roughly 4.2 million people as of 2017. Of these 4.2 million, about 82% are Arieles, Stjetima, or Idyka, with the remaining 18% being various denominations of Drakona, a small splash of Chanslinnorsi, and a smaller still population of Aetalis and Elusi which mostly exist at the border. While the latter four groups are seldom noticed or mentioned, much debate has been given to the idea of recognizing the Arieles language alongside Tuszkean as a semi-official language of the Kingdom. In particular, the idea has been pushed by the province of Seuyastazal–whose population is a slight Arieles majority–on the grounds that not doing so disenfranchises the Arieles population of the Kingdom. Nevertheless, efforts to force through a bill to debate in the Kryfonsparliszaiye have historically been unsuccessful, with the last effort being in 2001.

Most of the modern Kryfona Kingdom lives in urban or suburban areas, with estimates ranging from between 65% and 80% of the population depending on how an urban area is defined. Far and away the largest urban area in the Kingdom is the Nylzsryf metropolitan area–which as of 2017 was estimated to have over 15.2 million people in it–followed by Keszanetaa, Teras, Yarasil, and Hiy. About 17 metropolitan areas including the above areas have over a million people in them, and several more come very close to a million or "unofficially" have a million or more people in them by other estimates. The Southwest Kingdom is the fastest growing part of the nation, largely because of the growth of Nylzsryf and Teras as cities. Other large-growth areas include the Yaraan city of Yarasil, as well as the Mid-Kingdom city of Tivras.

The Kryfona Kingdom has two official languages (Kryfona and Yaraan) and a recognized language (Tuszkean), as established by the Language Act of 1935. Prior to 1935, the Kryfona Kingdom's de facto official language was Kryfona alone, with Yaraa and Tuszke recognizing their languages at the provincial level. Arieles, which is not recognized federally, is an official language in the provinces of Seuyastazal and Taharlsqov, and a minority language in Szaras and Yerljasqar.

About 74% of the population of the Kryfona Kingdom is fluent only in Kryfona, 3% only in Arieles or Stjetim, 2% only in Yaraan, 2% only in Tuszkean, and 1% in various other languages. The remaining 18% of the population, largely composed of Yaraans and Tuszkeans, is multilingual and typically knows a regional language plus Kryfona. A little over 15% of all multilinguals in the Kryfona Kingdom know 3 or more languages. Language knowledge is highly concentrated: virtually all Tuszkean and Yaraan speakers live inside their respective provinces, and most Aryela who speak Arieles exist in one of the three provinces with significant Arieles populations (Szaras, Seuyastazal, Taharlsqov). Efforts to introduce Arieles, Yaraan, and Tuszkean to broader swathes of the Kryfona population have been modestly successful, and since 2005 speakers of all three throughout the Kingdom have slowly been increasing. Most educational bodies in the Kingdom now require students to spend at least two years learning one of the three.

Aryela populations in the Kryfona Kingdom have long caucused to have Arieles become a recognized or official language of the Kingdom–despite its large speaking body, it has never been recognized federally. Generally, these efforts have been unsuccessful, although local Aryela efforts in Szaras got the province to recognize the language in 1985. Since 1999, four bills in the Kryfonsparliszaiye have been crafted surrounding the issue, all of which have failed narrowly. Even with the change of guard from the Royalists to the UKP, efforts to pass a bill recognizing Arieles as even a recognized language have been unsuccessful due to opposition from both Yaraans and Tuszkeans. The most recent effort to pass such a bill, which occurred in 2013, was voted down 45 to 36.

Drakona speakers in the Kingdom are a small but heavily concentrated minority, with almost 95% of their population existing in Vrlxsena. Some parts of Vrlxsena, including the capital city of Teras, have begun to release important documents and place streets signs in Drakona because of this. The effort has largely been spearheaded by the non-partisan Adborthos Caucus, a political party and Drakona recognition organization which currently holds a number of seats in both Vrlxsena's house and its senate.

The Kryfona Kingdom expressly protects the practice of all religion in its constitution, so provided that the religion does not actively harm another person; however, the Kingdom does not endorse any religion and is in fact a functionally irreligious state. As of 2017, over 81% of the Kingdom is in some capacity irreligious, by far the largest irreligious population in both the Old and New Worlds. The Kryfona Kingdom is also one of just two states without a de jure state religion (the UPOE is the other). Because of the rate of immigration into the Kryfona Kingdom, since 1900 the irreligious population has–very gradually–decreased, and will eventually be overtaken by the religious population. At best, however, the date at which irreligion is overtaken in the Kingdom (much less becomes a plurality) is over a century away at the current rate of decrease.

Of the most commonly practiced religions in the Kingdom, Syõniism is the largest by several million adherents. About 7.8 million Arieles, Kryfona, Stjetim and Idyka, and Drakona practice the religion in the Kingdom, the former two groups making up the overwhelming majority. The provinces of Seuyastazal, Szaras, and Taharlsqov have the largest number of Syõniists in the Kingdom, with Seuyastazal having an outright majority Syõniist population. Szaras and Taharlsqov do not have such populations, but Syõniism is nevertheless very large in both. Hardline Syõniism is a slight majority among Syõniists in the Kryfona Kingdom, with about 53.3% of the Syõniist population adhering to it. Hardliners in the Kryfona Kingdom are about 1.7 times more likely to be Liberal Hardliners than Conservative. Minority Syõniism is the branch of Syõniism adhered to by the remaining 46.7% of the Syõniists in the Kryfona Kingdom. Minority Syõniism is a liberal branch of the religion which is almost exclusively adhered to by non-Arieles–unsurprisingly, most Minority Syõniists are Kryfona.

Birahe is the religion of almost every Drakona, and many non-Drakona in the Kryfona Kingdom. Despite being a predominantly Drakonic religion in every other part of the world, more Kryfona (about 3.47 million) adhere to Birahe in the Kingdom than actual Drakona (about 677,000). The major reason for this is sheer numbers: there are only about 677,000 Drakona in the Kryfona Kingdom as a whole, compared to over 80 million Kryfona. This has led to a curious situation where the Kryfona Kingdom Birahe Church, which is much larger than the Adborthos Birahe Church of the Kryfona Kingdom, is a chapter of it. Most Kryfona adherents to Birahe live in Vrlxsena or Lawvsgara, both of which are close to many Drakona majority areas.

Other unspecified beliefs (that is, "personal beliefs," small or unorganized religions, and beliefs that a person feels do not fall into any specified denomination) make up the remaining 4.6% of religion in the Kryfona Kingdom. Truly unspecified beliefs, which are 4.3% of religion in the Kryfona Kingdom, make up almost all of this category. The remaining 0.3% of the Kingdom is made up of organized religions like Sęlakiem, Orjċi, Kayam, Elųsiism, and their various small offshoots and denominations. These latter religions are virtually negligible in both size and influence in the Kryfona Kingdom, and almost all exist at the border, where small communities that practice them exist. Orjċi is the single religion of the four to have a proper church in the Kryfona Kingdom, although it is a regional church and not a national one.

Family structure

As of 2017, about 61% of all Kryfona were married, 14% had never married, 10% were widowed, and about 5% were divorced. Owing to gradual shifts beginning in the late 1800s and early 1900s, there is no singular and dominant familial structure in most of the Kryfona Kingdom. Nevertheless, the primary caregiver in a modern Kryfona family is still usually the mother, while the father typically works and is the primary breadwinner for the household.

Historically, Kryfona families were very centralized and heavily based around a "nuclear family" unit of two parents and a child, and the father and mother taking the roles of breadwinner and caregiver respectively. As noted above, however, shifting political and social winds gradually brought an end to the dominance of this family structure, and there are today many family structures that exist throughout the Kingdom. This relatively sudden shift in family structure was brought on by a multitude of events, namely the Kryfona Civil War which ravaged the Kingdom's population, but also the legalization of gay marriage and the social revolutions then occurring in Yaraa and Tuszke.

Government and politics

The Kryfona Kingdom is officially a federal constitutional monarchy whose government is organized into monarchic, legislative, and judicial branches. This system was first established in 1729 with the founding of the Kryfonsparliszaiye, the nation's legislative body, and has since been codified into law. Prior to 1729, the nation was virtually an absolute monarchy, and operated simply with monarchic and judicial branches. In more recent memory, the powers of the monarchic branch have been rolled back considerably, although the monarch remains the supreme authority of the Kingdom. As established by the Constitution of the Kryfona Kingdom, each branch has the power to check the other two in order to prevent perceived overreach.

In essence, their powers are summarized as follows:

  • Monarchic: The Office of the Monarchy and its various departments. Ratifies all treaties, laws, and other motions, and has final say on all such matters, with exception to when the Legislative branch overrides the King with a super majority in the Kryfonsparliszaiye. Has the ability to create law him or herself (has not been done since the establishment of the Kryfonsparliszaiye). Has the ability to un-ratify a treaty (subject to Kryfonsparliszaiye approval). Appoints all members of his or her cabinet, and has the power to fire them so long as a suitable replacement can be found and approved by the Kryfonsparliszaiye within 100 days. Controls the military, and in theory has the ability to order military action without check (a King has not authorized such action without Kryfonsparliszaiye approval in over a century, however). Appoints judges to the High Court of the Kryfona Kingdom and each District Court (subject to Kryfonsparliszaiye approval).
  • Legislative: The 81-seat Kryfonsparliszaiye. Passes all federal laws and motions (subject to Monarchic ratification), and has the ability to override a Monarchic veto of a law or motion with a super majority. Repeals all federal laws, except in circumstances where they are struck down by the High Court. Has sole ability to amend the Kryfona constitution with a super majority (subject to High Court and then King approval, followed by a majority vote). Controls the following of a treaty (the Kryfonsparliszaiye must ratify a treaty by simple majority for it to be officially 'followed' even if it is law). Can call a 'recommendation vote' to either ratify or un-ratify a treaty. Approves un-ratification of treaties, as well as judges and replacement cabinet members appointed by the King. Approves or disapproves prospective military action.
  • Judicial: The High Court of the Kryfona Kingdom. Interprets standing laws. Checks and approves all laws passed by the Legislative branch. Has the ability to declare laws (and in some cases treaties) unconstitutional. Produces reports and amendments for treaties and laws to keep them in line with the Constitution (must be ratified by the King).

In terms of structure, the Kryfona Kingdom is currently both the oldest Old World federation and the oldest Old World monarchy, having been organized into a federation in 1717 and a monarchy in 1248. Although the Kryfona Kingdom has not always been a Kingdom, today the monarchy is considered one of the inalienable aspects of Kryfona society. With the exception of small movements which seek its abolition like the Republican Movement, virtually all Kryfona support the continued existence of the monarchy. An amendment to the constitution, the Kingdom Amendment of 1903, established that there would permanently be some form of monarchy in the Kingdom. Federalism is also an important part of the Kryfona government, as since the federation's establishment, the Kryfona Kingdom has operated with a three-level (federal, provincial, and local) government system. The duties of local government may and often do vary by province, not least because the Kryfona Kingdom does not have a sub-division equivalent to a county (unincorporated territories follow provincial law by default). All positions at local, provincial, and federal levels are decided by a first-past-the-post voting system, which has been often criticized both by foreign observers, the public at large, and politicians.

Generally speaking, the 19 provinces of the Kryfona Kingdom follow the structure of the federal government in that they have legislative, judicial, and executive (monarchic) branches of their provincial governments. Local government is typically simplified to a two-branch system where executive and legislative are merged, and judicial functions somewhat independently from the executive-legislative. Five provinces (Lawvsgara, Rsza, Vrlxsena, Szaras, and Azsaeh) have a bicameral legislative branch instead of a unicameral legislative branch. All positions are, as mentioned, elected with first-past-the-post voting.

Political divisions

The Kryfona Kingdom consists of 19 provinces, two of which (Yaraa and Reriskzeiy) are autonomous. Provinces are the highest level of political division in the Kryfona Kingdom, and are the major political division of the Kingdom. The Kryfona Kingdom does not have a national subdivision comparable to a county, so in most cases subdivided into incorporated and unincorporated regions, with the incorporated regions having a more powerful government and unincorporated regions having a less powerful government. In Yaraa and Reriskzeiy, however, county-equivalents do exist in the form of natŭes and natizeži, respectively. The provinces of Szaras and Seuyastazal have similar county-like subdivisions known as devisasi, but these are used only for record keeping purposes. The closest national system to counties used by the Kryfona Kingdom is the electoral district system, which is only used during elections.

With exception to the two autonomous provinces, provinces answer entirely to the Kryfona crown and are subject to a series of restrictions not unlike those of U.S. states. Provinces are not allowed to conduct foreign relations, mint their own currency, make war, or secede from the Kryfona Kingdom, among other restrictions. While most of these restrictions also apply to the two autonomous provinces, they do not answer in full to the crown and reserve the rights of secession and currency minting. The two autonomous provinces are also allowed their own regional governments, which for the most part control important services and government functions in place of the federal government.

In order to ascend to the status of a province, the region in question which wants to ascend must generally be organized into a territory or other political division, and exceed a certain population. While sometimes, like with Seuyastazal Province, this is not necessary, with others it is a prerequisite. Vyfarla Province did not ascend until well over a century after it was first organized into territories because neither North nor South Vyfarla were large enough–only in the 1870s did the two combined meet the requirements, and it was not until 1900 that Vyfarla ascended.

Parties and elections

The Kryfona Kingdom has, for most of its history, been a two-party state in which power has alternated between the Kryfona Royalist Party and Kryfona Loyalist Party. Since 1900, however, the Kingdom has gradually expanded into a multi-party state in which there are several viable "federal parties" in each election. Six parties currently stand at the federal level and hold seats in the Kryfonsparliszaiye, these parties being the United Kryfona Party, the Yaraan Kryfon's Movement, the Aryela Party, the Pažem Tuszkeya, and the aforementioned KLP and KRP. Under the Majority Party Act of 1839, only these six parties are currently eligible to stand in federal elections. The Majority Party Act, which dictates the number of parties which can stand federally at any given time, limited federal party numbers to two from 1839 to 1902, to three from 1902 to 1962, and to five from 1962 to 1981. The current limit is six. All Kryfonsparliszaiye elections since 1903 have been contested by at least three parties.

Typical "solid" constituencies for each party.
Gained seats for each party in the last elections.
Although many Kryfonsparliszaiye seats are "solid" for a certain party, about 32% of the Kryfonsparliszaiye's seats are properly contested per election.

Unlike many political systems, there is no absolute split between the "liberal" and "conservative" parties of the Kryfonsparliszaiye. While the Aryela Party is clearly liberal and the Kryfona Royalist Party clearly conservative, the other four parties vary by election and typically do not fall statically into one category or another. The UKP, for example, the current incumbent party, is nominally right-wing but could easily be considered a left-wing party; the YKM, a traditionally-left party, has historically been centrist and at some points in its existence right-wing. This is largely a byproduct of the big-tent nature of every federal party (with exception to the Aryela Party)–it is generally beneficial to hold at least some popular policy points, and thus the difference between liberal and conservative parties is blurred.

Each party at the federal level has a number of "safe" constituencies which it holds. The UKP has the largest number of these "safe" constituencies with 15, followed by the KRP at 12, the YKM at 10, the KLP at 9, the Pažem at 4, and the Aryela at 2. With the exception of the KRP and Aryela Party, "safe" constituencies are almost all bunched together–the UKP dominates the Southwest, the YKM dominates Yaraa, the Pažem dominates Reriskzeiy, and the KLP dominates Elesaqa.

At the provincial level, many more parties exist and contest elections, some of which are rather large. Among the more significant sub-federal parties are the Progressive Party, the Kryfona Conservative Party, the KSPP and Social Populists, and the Republican Movement, all of which have affiliate parties and exist in multiple provinces. According to the CFE, there are over one hundred major and minor parties which hold or contest seats at the provincial level.

Traditionally, there is a distinction between the federal parties and the sub-federal parties in that federal parties seldom contest sub-federal elections as a party. While all federal parties hold seats in provincial legislatures, these seats are typically won by party members on behalf of the party rather than by the party itself. Party funding for provincial elections is typically negligible unless there is a particular reason for the funding to occur, and as such most candidates for the federal parties either crowdfund their expenses or pay for them out of pocket. This distinction is mostly the byproduct of the political system the Kryfona Kingdom, in which provincial legislatures are typically far removed from the national legislature and thus there is no incentive for federal parties to control them.

Foreign relations

Despite its rocky relationship with many of its neighbors, the Kryfona Kingdom is the Old World's dominant political power and thus it has foreign relations with both the national and sub-national governments of the region. The Kryfona Kingdom is a member state of the Global Unified Initiative, as well as a member of the Old World Unified Initiative and the Commission on Warfare and Weaponry. It is a signatory to the Chemical Weaponry Ban Treaty, the Atomic and Nuclear Weaponry Ban Treaty, and a plethora of other such treaties. Nevertheless, the Kingdom is notoriously stingy in regards to the signing of treaties–because the Kryfonsparliszaiye can effectively 'veto' treaties, since 1951 the Kingdom has only truly ratified about thirty treaties of the sixty treaties proposed by the Global Unified Initiative. The Kingdom has embassies in all recognized states, as well as the disputed states of Lunaria, Krystala'ia, Idyka, and Stjetima. It also has embassies in the unorganized Lyoonos and Luenas regions, and sub-national embassies in the autonomous provinces of Yaraa and Tuszke, as well as in the seven ethnic territories of the Arieles Kingdom. This policy has drawn significant criticism from national governments as 'legitimizing' non-extant states; nonetheless the Kryfona Kingdom continues to practice such a policy.

Notes

  1. By law, as a recognized language, the Tuszkean language is protected under law, but government offices, television and radio stations, newscasts, and things of that nature are not obligated nor required to translate documents and publications into Tuszkean. Nonetheless, many choose to do so, as the provincial laws of Reriskzeiy Province requires that organizations (aside from government ones) are required to do so or else they are not licensed to publish or broadcast in Reriskzeiy.
  2. It should be noted that the notions of species and race are very different among most nations in the Old and New Worlds, and thus these numbers could wildly vary by the definitions established in each country. The statistics listed below follow the notion of species and race as established by the Kryfona Kingdom. For more on that subject, see Species and race in the Kryfona Kingdom.
