The Loyalist Alliance (Kryfona: Lauyalisim-alyaza; For. Kryf. /ˈlˌjɑ.lɪ.zm ˌælˈjɑ.zɑ/), sometimes known as the Loyalist Assembly[note 1] was a rough coalition of Loyalist party members who—during the 1770s and 1780s—caucused independently of the Loyalist Party, largely over the party’s lack of stance on secessionism. Never a "formal" party (formal party registration would not exist for another four decades) but well established by its creators, the Loyalist Alliance was represented at the federal level in two of its three elections, and continued to be represented by candidates until 1846 in provincial legislatures, mostly on the wings of copycats and Loyalist infighting. The name is generally considered to have died out politically in the 1840s; however, debate over whether or not later claims to the name should be counted under the Loyalist Alliance umbrella remains a matter of debate in Kryfona political history.

The original Loyalist Alliance was the brainchild of Zsykes Jazilu and Tavarys Denezs, both of whom were ardently pro-unity. At the time a significant split between the coalition that made up Loyalist Party voters was on the topic of secession, and while most of the party held no opinion on the matter, many of the pro-unity members were quite vehement in their beliefs. This was a matter of low level, and then later significant conflict between the larger, apathetic body of the Loyalist Party and the smaller portion which became the Loyalist Alliance, and was likely the instigator of the group's creation. This was not the only thing that set apart the group that became the Loyalist Alliance, however; despite the more authoritarian tendencies of the group, many of the eventual Alliance members were considerably more liberal than the party itself. This also most likely contributed to the founding of the Alliance. In either case, by mid-1771 the Loyalist Alliance had been loosely organized—in private—by Jazilu and Denezs. Owing to the fact that party registration did not exist until considerably later, the Loyalist Alliance "members"—of which there were four in 1771—were elected on the Loyalist ticket that year, which won 32 other seats. After the election, the Alliance was "created" and established, and distinguished itself from the Loyalists thereafter. An unintended consequence of this was that many Loyalists were caught off guard by the change and quickly came to loathe the Alliance.

The Loyalist Alliance did little in the period between 1771 and 1777, caucusing almost entirely with the Loyalist Party from which it split. This did not stop voters from skewering them at the voting booths however, and in 1777 three of the four Alliance candidates who had won their elections were summarily replaced by other candidates, who went on to win their seats. Jazilu, the sole Alliance candidate to win reelection, did so barely and had to stave off a primary from Loyalist members. He was shunned by the party after winning, and effectively blacklisted as a result of his win. As a practical matter, the 1777 election essentially did in the federal period of the Loyalist Alliance: in 1783, the group won no seats, and soon thereafter effectively disintegrated. Nonetheless, organization efforts by rebel Loyalists who had voted for the candidates and liked them took the place of federal representation, and for almost seventy years after the 1783 election, Loyalist Alliance "candidates" would be elected to provincial houses, including an 1804-1807 wave in which 37 Loyalist Alliance "candidates" won elections in provincial houses. Gradually though, the steam of the name began to die down, and by the 1840s there were few if any Kryfona who voted in favor of the Loyalist Alliance's remnants. The last Loyalist Alliance "candidate" lost their seat in 1846, and this is generally considered to be the point at which the group died completely.

Despite being a relative blip in the history of the Kryfonsparliszaiye, the Loyalist Alliance represents the only group of candidates—before or since—to ever be elected to the Kryfonsparliszaye without representing one of the parties which can legally contest Kryfonsparliszaiye elections. Until 1903, the four elected Loyalist Alliance members were also the only candidates in the history of the Kryfonsparliszaiye to not represent either the Royalists or the Loyalists.

Notes

  1. The "Loyalist Assembly" name was used officially in the 1783 elections as well as some down-ballot elections and by later candidates; officially however these are considered to be under the umbrella of the Loyalist Alliance name, and the official name of the group is considered to be the latter in all circumstances.
