The Night of the Long Riot refers to a massive riot that broke out in Nylzsryf, the capital of the Kryfona Kingdom, on 13 July, 1961. What began as a spontaneous demonstration by members of the Eporisya Malosom za Kryfonakinadina quickly became violent when Tuszkean counter-protesters assembled themselves and began hurling bottles and rocks at the assembled Impurist crowd. Despite efforts to prevent the violence from spreading, police quickly found themselves massively outnumbered and, in a widely criticized move, pulled out of the area in which the violence was taking place. Widespread rioting by both Impurists and anti-Impurists followed thereafter and spread into the immediate vicinity; tensions that had been bubbling for over thirty years quickly exploded into utter chaos which proceeded to overwhelm the police services of the city of Nylzsryf.

Unlike many Nylzsryf riots, the Long Riot was unusually and exceptionally violent, and spread throughout the city extremely quickly. Over the course of just fourteen hours, rioters burned at least 711 buildings, partially or wholly destroyed 35 city blocks (including two blocks on the outskirts of Downtown Nylzsryf), and killed 55 people. 21 of the deaths in the riot were caused when a bomb of unknown origin exploded in the midst of a crowd of looters; 19 people burned to death; 10 died of smoke inhalation; and 5 were beaten or shot to death. Over 550 injuries were reported, and economic damages totaled to almost three billion Daeszr, making the riot the costliest riot in the history of Nylzsryf and the entire Kingdom. The city was effectively shut down for three days during and after the incident, and a state of martial law was declared for over two weeks after the riot due to concerns over continued tension and retaliatory attacks.

Background

Although Nylzsryf was a city that was relatively unaffected by Impurist violence, owing to its large Standard Kryfona population and the visibility of any attacks on its minority populations, there was a great deal of tension between anti-Impurists and Impurists within the city, and especially among voters of each respective bloc. Impurists had managed to find several seats in the legislature of Lawvsgara, all of which were within the confines of Nylzsyrf and its metropolitan area. Conversely, many of the city's remaining seats were controlled by decidedly anti-Impurist parties or, in a few cases, the Anti-Impurist League, which made its home in the city. Most of the city was against Impurism, despite the relatively conservative lean of many of its constituent neighborhoods, and even those who were supporters of Impurism in the city typically kept their relations to Impurists peaceful and minimal. This was the state of affairs in the city for almost thirty years.
