King Xeriren Nazseres Awaseq, Great Kryfona, OhK (For. Kryf. /ˈzɛˌrɪr.ɛn ˈɑˌwɑ.sɛk, ˈɑˌvɑ/;[note 1] 8 January, 1874 - 21 July, 1952), was the twenty-ninth monarch of the Kryfona Kingdom and its thirtieth ruler, ruling the Kingdom from 8 August, 1902 to 21 July, 1952, when he died.
The son of an upper-class businessman and a local government staffer, Awaseq was born in a suburb of Eiwena in the South Vyfarla Territory on 8 January, 1874. Awaseq grew up in the well off Tazne neighborhood of the city, and attended his primary schooling as well as college in the city during his childhood and early adulthood. Despite his later political background, in his teenage and early adult years, Awaseq was thoroughly uninterested in politics, instead hoping to have his big break in the military. He joined the Vyfarla provincial corps in 1890 at the age of 16, and by 1895 had climbed the ranks to a Territory Commander. He was appointed to the national military in 1896, and stationed in Nylzsryf shortly thereafter.
Awaseq's reputation proceeded him in Nylzsryf, and he was quick to continue his rise in the Kryfona Army there. He climbed quickly through the Commander ranks after receiving a string of promotions on behalf of then-King Yeqsrin Worissilo. This promotional string boosted Awaseq to the rank of High Commander at the age of 22, in late 1897. On 30 December, 1897, Awaseq was then promoted to his first commissioned rank as the Territory General of Vyfarla. A year later, at 24, Awaseq was promoted to the Provincial General rank; this would be the highest rank to which he would climb as a Kryfona Army soldier. He was the youngest among the Generals in the Kryfona Kingdom at the time, and even today he is one of only a few Kryfona soldiers to attain a General rank before the age of 25.
Awaseq's tenure in the General Core was short lived, however. Two years later, upon the outbreak of the Kryfona Civil War, Awaseq submitted his resignation and owed his services and military ability to the Kryfona Royalist Movement–effectively, the monarchy in exile. After High General Yiulstihq Vryge, Awaseq was the highest ranking member of the Kryfona Army to resign and join the opposition. Awaseq acted as a High General to the KRM during the course of the civil war, and ultimately became the army-in-revolt's highest ranking officer. He was promoted to the position on 1 August, 1901, and held it for the rest of the war.
After the Royalist Movement won, and reestablished the monarchy, an internal "election" of sorts took place among the significant members of the Movement's staff. Awaseq was included in this, and there was no doubt among the members of the Movement that then-28-year-old Awaseq was one of the best people who could possibly lead the Kingdom. Awaseq reluctantly accepted this position, and was crowned as the Monarch of the Kryfona Kingdom on 15 August, 1902. He would go on to rule the Kingdom for 49 years, one of the longest reigns in the history of the Kryfona crown.
Awaseq's reign as King was on the whole, surprisingly quiet. Despite the great catastrophe of the Kryfona Civil War, which resulted in nearly 40 years of rebuilding, repopulating, and restoration to "undo" even in part, Awaseq's reign was not blighted by any other wars, nor by significant political crises of the sort that had brought down a number of previous Kings before him. Of note, however, were the troubles of the Yaraan and Tuszkean political revolutions, which began under him and ultimately failed to be controlled by him and his cabinet. The corresponding surge of Impurism and the Eporisya Malosom was likewise punted on by Awaseq–all this to be dealt with by his son Tyeri, naturally. Awaseq's reign also ended in great controversy, as in May of 1952, shortly before his death, he purged his cabinet in the infamous "Massacre of the Cabinet" that resulted in the firing of 13 cabinet members over ideological differences.
Early life
Childhood education and family history
Xeriren Nazseres Awaseq was born on the morning of 8 January, 1874, in the small, functionally suburban town of Nyhana, South Vyfarla, to Kazsa Garye Awaseq and Gelia Tebrizs Nazseres. His mother Gelia was a government staffer in the provisional territorial government of South Vyfarla at his birth, and the descendant of a family who made its fortune farming in the province's fertile soils in the decades before. Father Kazsa was a semi-wealthy businessman who had made his wealth predominantly in real-estate, which at the time was a booming industry in the territory. Awaseq's grandfather, Tamuzse, was one he grew to know well and idolized. Tamusze was a Territory General in the Kryfona military throughout his life, and spent forty-two years serving in the Army before his retirement. He would live to see ten years of Xeriren's life.
Awaseq was the third and final child of the couple, and the only one to live past the age of one–childhood mortality was significant in the South Vyfarla Territory well into the 1890s. Xeriren was named for his great-grandfather, Xeriren Talys Awaseq, who had fought in the Majszyx War from 1836 to 1844, after which point he was severely wounded and given a medical discharge. Xeriren Talys had long died by the time the younger Xeriren had been born, and thus Xeriren was known simply as Xeriren for the majority of his childhood. Although born in Nyhana, the Awaseq family moved out of the town within two months of Xeriren's birth to Eiwena, and Xeriren spent essentially his entire childhood there.
Xeriren's early childhood was largely an uneventful affair from the perspective of historians. The Awaseq family was, although not "rich" in a nationwide sense, well among the upper-class within South Vyfarla–from a practical standpoint, they were Vyfarlan one-percenters. Xeriren thus lived a very sheltered life, and there are in any case few records detailing his childhood comprehensively. What is known is that he was shy from an early age–something he retained well into adulthood–and was virulently introverted, often taking little interest in gatherings and social affairs. During his early life, he had only one or two friends at any given time, and this was a trend that was to continue for most of the rest of his life. He was, at the age of seven, reputedly sent to therapy to "treat" these matters but, after several months without success, this therapy was apparently withdrawn and ended. The veracity of this claim is disputed however, and given that Xeriren did not attend therapy or seek any sort of further mental attention in his life, the credibility of the claim is arguable.
Nonetheless, Xeriren's life after this point remained on the whole very quiet; at the age of six he was enrolled in the South Vyfarlan Academy in downtown Eiwena, and was educated there until he turned fifteen. There is nothing to suggest that he had difficulty in his education; as far as it is known, he was a dedicated student. His student records are well documented, and beyond the odd below-average grade, he was well versed in the classes he took. Many of Xeriren's teachers later recalled that he was among the best of the students at the Academy, which at the time was a fairly large institution. He talked relatively little during the period, but took unusual interest in much of what he was taught. In particular, around the age of eight Xeriren was suddenly captivated by the military and war and, leaning on Tamusze Awaseq, not long after expressed a desire to eventually become a military man. It was this career path that Awaseq embarked on from that time one, and by the age of twelve it was clear that his idea was, barring a cataclysmic change, set in stone.
Late youth and early career
Four years after setting out to become a military man and by then aged sixteen, Xeriren submitted his application and joined the Vyfarla provincial corps. Being from a rich family and in fairly good shape, Xeriren was accepted to the corps quickly, and assigned the rank of Recruit. Although he was not necessarily a model soldier in terms of his ability to act and to fight, it was obvious even when he was first recruited that Xeriren was a very intelligent soldier. Just four months after joining the provincial corps, Xeriren received his first promotion (to Clearcap), and within a year he had been promoted twice more, becoming a provincial Graycap.
...
Despite his military ambitions, Awaseq took up an interest in politics sometime around his promotion to High Commander. By the time he was promoted to Provincial General, Awaseq was noted among the General Core as being overtly political and, curiously, quite royalist. Much of the General Core at the time was inherently loyalist, owing to the nature of the army at that point. By 1899, the last Kryfona war had ended almost fifty years previously, and subsequently the military had downsized and liberalized considerably from its heyday. Awaseq was the odd one out, in this case, owing to his conservative upbringing. In part because of this, and to a greater extent because of his sudden interest in politics, Awaseq briefly considered leaving his position in favor of a political career, but ultimately opted against it.
