The 1974 Adborthos Coup (also known as The Adborthos Mutiny, or Operation Yosthosa) occured on August 20th, 1974 when General Radina Nenathosin of the Adborthos-Yolatho Armed Forces turned his troops against the government of Adborthos-Yolatho and seized power for himself. The coup was swift and brutal, taking many off guard, and a number of people in the government, most notably president of Adborthos-Yolatho Kaila Gatil were killed in the coup. The coup resulted in Nenathosin gaining power, and began the era of The Adborthos Dictatorship.

Background

When Kaila Gatil took power in 1967, she promised extensive reforms to the armed forces. These reforms came in 1971, and amongst other things included a massive pay drop and considerably less military spending, dropping her popularity with the armed forces to 12%, the lowest ever for any Adbortho leader. Despite the reforms being very unpopular with the military, Gatil refused to do anything about them. Military unrest rose, and culminated on June 18th, 1972 when a disgruntled soldier attempted to assassinate Gatil. The assassination failed, and the soldier and two co-conspriators were executed for their part in the plot. After the attempt, Gatil levied further restrictions upon the army. The restrictions continued for a little over a year before being lifted, but after another assassination plot was uncovered in early 1974, they were reinstated. Upon the reinstatement of the reforms, the army once again began plotting against Gatil. The head of the plotting was head of the army, Radina Nenathosin. The plan was originally to simply take Gatil hostage and force her to resign, but soon ballooned into a plot to overthrow the entire government of Adborthos-Yolatho. The plans were completed on August 4th, and in the early hours of August 20th, 1974 Nenathosin began the coup.

The coup

At approximately 6:21 AM ten Adborthos-Yolatho soldiers stormed the estate of Kaila Gatil, in the process killing three of her guards. While Gatil herself escaped, most of her guards were captured, as was vice president of Adborthos-Yolatho Sadane Yidal. The guards and Yidal would later be tried and executed under the Nenathosin regime. Around the same time as the storming of the Gatil estate, troops seized the town hall of Ratinethos, as well as the capitol building of Adborthos-Yolatho, the Dasa Alaya radio station building and the Zastahosa Mint. Nenathosin, over the radio, announced that a military coup had taken place and that he would be taking the position of president of Adborthos-Yolatho. Several minutes after this announcement, loyalist forces lead by Gatil herself attempted to take back the Dasa Alaya station, however it was quickly crushed, and Gatil was killed in the attack.

With Gatil dead and second in command Yidal captured, Nenathosin became the president of Adborthos-Yolatho due to the system of succession in place. Immediately after taking power, Nenathosin declared martial law, and declared in a short speech to the population that the "Republic was no longer in place," and that "A new era has dawned upon the Adborthos!" The speech was broadcast to the point of ad nauseum, and by the end of the morning, everyone in the Adborthos-Yolatho Republic knew of what had happened.

Aftermath of the coup

The coup was officially declared over at noon, and the Adborthos-Yolatho Republic was declared to have become the Adborthos Aiadna -- the "dictatorship." This was not necessarily seen as a bad thing, since the Adborthos-Yolatho Republic had been a dictatorship (albeit a friendly, non-totalitarian one, since the concept of a "dictatorship" in the Adborthos was simply a government with absolute control over the country, good or bad) but quickly it became seen as one when Nenathosin began to drive the country in to the ground.
