The Arieles-controlled province of Jolăăto called a referendum of secession and reintegration on the morning of September 9th, 1983, after several months of protests and violence had racked the province. Although the Ratinethos Pact that had been signed by the newly-formed Second Republic explicitly restricted the annexed region from calling such referendums -- deferring them instead to the Arieles government -- the government deemed it necessary to the continued function of the province on account of the tensions.

With a nearly 98% turnout, the populace of the Jolăăto overwhelmingly approved the referendum, with 92% voting in favor of secession and 88% in favor of reintegration. Despite this, and in spite of the Second Republic welcoming Jolăăto back in, the Arieles refused to recognize the referendum. The next day, September 10th, the Arieles threatened to invade the Yolatho, under the guise of "keeping [it] in line." In response, the Kryfona and Adborthos threatened to invade them if the invasion of Yolatho were attempted. The resulting standoff lasted four days, until eventually on September 14th, the Arieles disowned their claim of invasion. The Jolăăto was subsequently relinquished on the 15th, and on the 16th -- seven days after the referendum -- it was finally reintegrated into the Second Republic.
