The Edazoran Unified Party (Edazoran: ʅɒɔɿɷɩɔɛȷ ɩ̆ɜʅɾɔɝɔ ɝʌɔɩɔ̊; Edazoyasi Yogetapa Phayaa; Edazoran pronunciation: Listeni/dɑːzɔɪjɑːs jɑːɡɛtɑːpɑː fjɑː/) is a liberal Edazoyasi party and the currently ruling party in the United Provinces of Edazora. Founded in 1997 on the cusp of the first democratic elections in Edazora―and established with the ideology of equality in mind―the party quickly attracted wide support from broad swathes of Edazoran society; however, it was not until the 2010 elections that party gained significant control over the Edazoran government or the Palidaja of Edazora.

Standing for general liberalism, the Edazoran Unified Party is the farthest left of the four major Edazoran parties. Unlike other parties, the EUP enjoys broad support from the Edazoran populace, rather than from narrow demographics. The president of the party is current Edazoran president Yahagar Izos. He has been the party's sole candidate since the 2002 elections, having taken the place of party founder Kagha Jeiyos, and is currently the only non-GDU president to ever take office.

History

The roots of the EUP can be found within modern Edazoran society itself―compared to the Adborthos Republic, the other Old World dragon nation, Edazora is rather liberal, particularly in its central provinces. In part because of these central provinces, government policy during the days of the admittedly-right-wing Sira and Dalah regimes was actually rather liberal. In particular, liberalism in Edazora flourished under the Dalah regime and became the dominant ideology in most of Edazora. It was only natural then that with the announcement that Sidoa Dalah would be stepping down and establishing a democracy, a liberal party to represent the flourishing ideology would quickly be formed―and indeed it did.

The political party that would become the Edazoran Unified Party was established on July 19th, 1997―the first of the major political parties to be founded―shortly after Sidoa Dalah announced that at the end of 1998 he would be stepping down as the absolute monarch of the Provinces after a rule of thirty-three years. Although rather informal, the founding of the party was the work of Kagha Jeiyos, a young political man who'd just graduated Kataboriyos' Grand University a few weeks earlier, and several of his companions including eventual president Yahagar Izos. The party registered officially with the monarchy under Dalah a little under a month later on August 15th, 1997, one of thirteen to do so. Originally, the party formed under the name of the Unified Liberal Organization (ɩ̆ɜʅɾɔɩɔ ɂȷ̆ʋɔ̊ɩɔ ɔɜɔ̊ɿɔ; Yogetaya Liobaaya Agaaza), but this was seen as limiting to the party's goal of Edazoran equality and was changed to the current name shortly after.

First elections: 1998

For most of the rest of 1997, the EUP quietly organized itself, occasionally fundraising but generally doing little else to catch the attention of the public. Only at the beginning of 1998, when Kagha Jeiyos resolved that the party had become structured enough to represent the interests of liberal Edazorans, did the party begin recruitment efforts and registration drives. Owing to the party's big-tent like nature, the EUP virtually immediately caught on with the general public, and became the fastest growing political party in the nation. By June of 1998, the party boasted a membership of almost 400,000, by far the largest of any of the registered parties. Only the Greater Drakona Union, the Edazoran centrist party, had a remotely comparable membership at the time.

The party nominated Kagha Jeiyos as their presidential candidate in late August of 1998, and established funding for both their presidential and down-ballot candidates on 1 September, 1998. The day after, Jeiyos began campaigning around the provinces, along with several of the EUP's nominees for Palidaja seats. During the months of September and November in particular, Jeiyos burned a trail through the majority-liberal provinces of Kataboriyos and Dahalyo, stopping to make almost forty speeches on the way, and in part because of his campaigning, by December, party registration had topped 600,000. Nevertheless, both the parliamentary and presidential elections were disastrous for the EUP, as Jeiyos lost the presidential election by almost 15 points to Kanha Dalah of the GDU, and the GDU rode to a majority in the Palidaija with 39 of its 64 seats. The massive defeat came as a disheartening shock to both Edazoran liberals and the leadership of the EUP; however, Jeiyos was proud that the party had even achieved what it had, and vowed that he would continue to fight for liberal representation.

Slow rise: 1999 - 2010

With the end of 1998, the EUP settled into its role as a part of the―on paper, rather weak―opposition in the first session of the Palidaja. However, the opposition of the first session was aided heavily by the GDU's lack of unity: although it held majority in the Palidaja and the presidential seat, its centrist viewpoints coupled with the party leadership's diverse opinions led to serious infighting within the party. In particular, massive disagreement between parts of the GDU on the topic of illegalizing gay marriage―which had been legalized with an amendment to the Siraist Constitution in 1940―led to the rejection of the Reclassification Amendment of 1999 by a vote of 36 - 28. A revised amendment was also rejected by a vote of 37 - 27 later that year.

Approval ratings for the GDU administration between February and May of 1999.

In February of 1999, the EUP entered into an alliance with the Seyondarists, Monarchists, and the Isolationists that came to be known as the Sombeiya Aleansa or Shadow Alliance. In essence, the Sombeiya Aleansa functioned and voted the way the general public would―this in an attempt to garner the support of the public. However, in the first few months of the Aleansa, this tactic did not work as well as was intended; despite a noticeable uptick in public support, approval ratings for the incumbent GDU remained above 50 percent into June.

The Aleansa's―and subsequently the EUP's―first real break came in July of 1999, when Kanha Dalah and most of the party's delegates broke with more conservative members of the party, who made up the lower ranks, and supported a measure to make amendments which attempted to overturn certain rights passable only with a supermajority rather than a simple majority. The measure, the Civil Rights Protection Amendment, passed the Palidaja with a 34 - 30 vote and was quickly codified into the Siraist Constitution, but in doing so Dalah caused massive controversy within the GDU. Within three days of the signing of the amendment, the GDU's disapproval ratings soared to as many as six percentage points above their approval, with more progressive elements of the party jumping over to the EUP and more conservative elements threatening to start a revolt within the party or even a new party altogether. From the event, the EUP gained a significant new following, and for most of the rest of 1999 the GDU's approval rating remained sub-50.

For the rest of the calendar year of 1999, the EUP found itself in the unusual situation of being the most popular party in the provinces. Jeiyos, seeing an opportunity, did not hesitate to use the period to push the party's agenda. Although the next elections were not for another two and a half years, Jeiyos and other delegates of the EUP traveled around the country seeking to garner future support for the party.

Ideology

The official ideology of the Edazoran Unified Party has always been liberalism, although in the years prior to attaining a minority in the Palidaja and winning the presidency the party advocated for policies that were much more centrist. Since gaining power, the party has become markedly more liberal, but nevertheless retained its broad appeal with the Edazoran public. According to polling done by Edazoyasia in 2014, the EUP is the most popular of the four major parties in Edazora.

Generally speaking, the specific branch of ideology which the EUP follows is modern liberalism. The dominant policies of the EUP have been non-interventionist, pro-regulation, and pro-worker, although there are small pockets within the party which advocate for more conservative policies. These conservatives are known in politics as Kasiphatisi, and they are predominantly from otherwise conservative EUP-voting regions. On the other side of the spectrum, there are significant pockets of far-left wingers known as the Eldezohsi who make up a large portion of the party's presence in the Palidaja; however, most of the party's membership―including leadership―is relatively moderate.
